This is a popular ancient story in Portugal And the symbol of rooster, in connection with this story, became a national emblem in Portugal.

In one banquette given by a rich proprietor of Barcelos, a valuable silver part was stolen and one of the guests was accused for it. He was judged guilty by the court. Despite the evident tests against him, the guest always claimed his innocence. The Magistrate gave the defendant one final chance of justifying. Seeing a rooster inside a hamper close to him, the guest said: "If I am innocent the rooster will sing". The rooster sang and the prisoner was set free.
